They are in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and in the food we eat. Our homes and our work places are full of chemicals, and our own body even makes much of them.<br />
Normally, our liver and kidneys have an amazing capacity to deal with all this junk, but in this industrialized age, they are having a difficult time keeping up with it all.<br />
While the EPA, the FDA and other governmental agencies try to contend with them, toxins have become a problem of tremendous proportion that is almost impossible to get under control. Studies may be done on individual products sold; consumed or utilized in some manner, but nothing is done about the accumulative effect of everything we use. We are taught not to combine certain cleaning products due to the potentially harmful chemical reactions they may have, but we’re not taught that using them alone on a regular basis causes a buildup of these chemicals, which alone may be harmful, but also which could potentially mix together over time inside of us as the liver tries to process them.</p>
<p>Every biological activity in the body creates its own metabolic wastes. In fact, half of the dry weight of your stools is comprised of cellular debris, microorganisms such as dead bacteria, viruses, parasites, molds, yeast and fungi, and wastes from other toxins and allergic responses. In addition, there are other toxins released as a byproduct of certain diseases such as cancer, biological and metabolic dysfunction, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, hepatic dysfunction, gastrointestinal disturbances, auto-immune diseases and acid/alkali imbalances.<br />
Our foods are grown in chemicals, chemicals are used to kill off insects and weeds, many are coated in waxes or some chemical to enable them to come to market with less blemishes and spoilage, they are gassed during transport, irradiated and sprayed with nitrates to keep them looking fresher. That’s just the so-called fresh stuff! Then we have the processing. Take those same chemicals we just discussed and add to them more chemicals to process the foods, dough conditioners, preservatives, anti-caking factors, fillers, excipients, binders, disintegrates, coatings, buffering agents, antimicrobial agents, emulsifying agents and the list goes on and on. Our liver wasn’t intended to deal with all of this! And this is only in our foods.<br />
Our vitamins, which purpose is to replace the nutrients absent from our diets contain synthetic compounds, waxes, fillers and excipients such as those listed above. In addition, they contain tableting agents, coatings identical to varnish, and vitamins that are fractionated, devitalized and biologically dead. If the body can extract a small fraction of the chemicals and convert it to a usable form, the body takes approximately 14 times the nutrients in order to run the systems to do the conversion process. This means you come up on the negative side! If it takes more resources to do a simple conversion process, something is wrong with that picture. Either way, the body has to deal with the load of a vitamin, rather than the vitamin supporting function.</p>
<p>Everything that goes into our mouths, in our lungs and through our skin must be processed. If we are filling them with junk faster than we can eliminate it, we overwhelm our eliminative system and it becomes sluggish and less responsive. Sooner or later, something has to give. How that manifests differs from person to person, however, doctors and researchers have associated certain symptoms with a toxic overload. They include fatigue, malaise, headaches, digestive distress, gut flora imbalance, achy joints, feeling weak and run-down, no motivation, skin diseases and more.</p>
<p>The body has many resources for eliminating the toxins. The blood carries toxins out of the body through the liver and kidney systems. If the colon is congested the blood gets “dirtied” up. The colon eliminates the most toxins. It works like a sewage system. If it gets clogged up, the toxins can re-enter the body and go through the filtering process all over again, creating a greater burden on the system. The lymphatic system eliminates wastes from the cells and blood, some toxins are released through the respiratory system, the skin (sweat), and also the upper digestive system helps denature certain toxins. With all of these resources, the body today has a difficult time keeping up.</p>
<p>Fortunately, there are programs available for assisting the body in the purification process. There are one day, three day, week long and 21 day purifications programs. There are daily nutrients or herbs you can take and other more complex programs. You want to find a program that involves the cleansing of all systems – blood, lymph, colon, liver, gallbladder and kidneys. It is also important to utilize a program which elicits both Phase I and Phase II of the liver detoxification pathways. Not doing that could result in some uncomfortable side effects. While most detoxification/purification programs are safe, it is always better to undergo such a program with the direction of a qualified physician. Most medical doctors aren’t familiar enough with purification programs to give an honest opinion or guidance, so don’t go driving them crazy with questions. However, most natural health care practitioners are familiar with purification programs or are willing to refer you to someone who is. As always, if you have complex medical issues, it is a good idea to consult with your physician and don’t try doing it without professional guidance.</p>
<p>Do what people have done for literally thousands of years (yet is more essential today than at any other time) – assist your body in cleansing on a regular basis. It’s easier than you think and you’ll be glad you did. So if you feel like your health has gone astray, learn how to safely detox today!</p>

In August, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association updated their physical activity guidelines, encouraging Americans to strength-train at least twice a week and work out all of the major muscle groups on top of regular cardio activity.<br />
They now recommend that adults perform eight to 12 reps of eight to 10 exercises on the chest, back, shoulders, upper legs, lower legs and arms, via either free weights, machines or weight-bearing activities. Adults 65 and older should strength-train two to three times a week, doing more reps with lighter weights, taking into account their fitness levels beforehand.<br />
These organizations are catching on to what many trainers and body builders have known for years — that no matter what your age, regular strength training builds up more than just muscles; it builds a healthier body.<br />
&#8220;More people are starting to realize that strength training doesn&#8217;t have to be getting out, lifting a ton of weight and being really sore,&#8221; says Amanda Carlson, a registered dietitian and director of performance nutrition and research at Athletes&#8217; Performance, an intensive training facility based in Arizona. &#8220;People are training to live better.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Declining muscle mass over years</h3>
<p>The benefits of building and preserving muscle are just about endless, and they include a better body composition and immune-system function, and a faster metabolism, says Bill Sonnemaker, and founder of the Atlanta-based personal-training facility Catalyst Fitness.</p>
<h3>Working our muscles is also particularly important as we age</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s estimated that unless we exercise them properly, we can lose five to seven pounds of muscle tissue each decade of our adult lives. In addition, we tend to gain fat as we grow older, due to the slowing of our metabolisms and usual decline in activity, making for a nasty double whammy, Carlson says.<br />
Research by Tufts University has found that strength training can add to bone density, potentially preventing osteoporosis.</p>
<h3>Use your whole body</h3>
<p>But while aging impairs our ability to recover after a bout of exercise (due to lower levels of testosterone and human-growth hormone) and robs us of some flexibility, over time, the way we build muscle stays pretty much the same. Experts say, overall, it&#8217;s more important to pay attention to your strength training ability level — whether you&#8217;re a beginner, intermediate or advanced — than your age.</p>
<p>&#8220;I train people in their 60s who can kick butt,&#8221; says Robert Reames, a Studio City, Calif.-based Gold&#8217;s Gym Fitness Institute expert. &#8220;If you&#8217;re a 65-year-old in good shape, you can accomplish what an average 25-year-old can accomplish.&#8221;<br />
Regardless of how old you are, experts say a crucial part of strength training is working in movements that involve the whole body. Exercises such as a squat to bicep curl to bench press give you the best return for your time and energy, burning more calories and addressing more muscles, says Sonnemaker. They also more closely simulate motions you regularly make, like lifting luggage or groceries.</p>
<h3>Change it up</h3>
<p>Once you come up with a successful strength training routine, your work isn&#8217;t done. You should aim to change your program every four to six weeks to prevent the plateau period that comes when your body adapts to stress, Sonnemaker says.<br />
This technique will also give you a chance to evaluate and increase the intensity of your workout, whether it&#8217;s by the amount of weight you&#8217;re lifting or the number of reps, says Edward Jackowski, CEO of the motivational fitness company Exude Inc. and author of the exercise guide &#8220;Escape Your Shape.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;The key to keeping muscle tone is not how much weight you lift, but your intensity,&#8221; Jackowski says. &#8220;It must match your current level of fitness. You have to do what you&#8217;re capable of doing.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dear Friends,</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how the FDA&#8217;s tune about stevia changes once Coca-Cola has plunked down the hefty chunk of change required for &#8220;approval&#8221; of the all-natural sweetener. The soda giant is teaming up with another company to get a version of stevia called Rebiana approved for use in some of its products. But that hasn&#8217;t happened yet, and in the meantime, the FDA continues to make life miserable for other manufacturers using stevia in their products.</p>
<p>The most recent company to come under attack is Hain Celestial Group, which produces Celestial Seasonings tea. One of the products in the company&#8217;s &#8220;Zingers&#8221; line, a &#8220;tea to go&#8221; drink mix, uses stevia to sweeten the beverage. But since the company hasn&#8217;t forked over any ransom payments &#8212; I mean &#8220;approval fees&#8221; &#8212; to the FDA, the agency has insisted that Hain Celestial discontinue referring to the product as beverage or drink mix and re-label it as a &#8220;dietary supplement.&#8221;</p>
<p>The warning letter to Hain Celestial also stated that &#8220;data and information necessary to support the safe use [of stevia] have been lacking. In fact, literature reports have raised safety concerns about the use of stevia&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s nice that they&#8217;re so concerned for our welfare, and protecting us from those &#8220;safety hazards.&#8221; Except for the fact that they only bother doing it when it&#8217;s convenient for them.</p>
<p>We both know that there ARE no real safety concerns with stevia use &#8212; that&#8217;s just a nice hook the FDA can hang its hat on for now, while it holds out for its fat paycheck from Coca-Cola to clear. And once it does, I have no doubt that the agency will suddenly be convinced, beyond a shadow of a doubt, about what we&#8217;ve known all along: that stevia is one of the best, and safest, sweeteners available.</p>
